TRADEWARS 2002 v3.09
An ATDT DOS door package
========================

WHAT THIS IS

The last official DOS release of TradeWars 2002 (Gold, v3.09,
Martech Software, November 13 1998), the most famous BBS door
of them all, packaged and ready for the ATDT DOS door system.

The one-time install has been performed:

    - The three self extracting archives were unpacked into the
layout INSTALL.BAT creates (the game, the ANSI screens in
ANSI\, the Gold extras in GOLD\).
    - BIGBANG was run: a fresh 1000 sector universe, 400 ports,
200 planets, 200 player slots, 800 ships (the unregistered
      defaults).
    - Node 1 was configured in TEDIT: drop file DOOR.SYS in the
      current directory, FOSSIL communications.
    - The first EXTERN maintenance pass was run.

No players exist. The universe is untouched.

INSTALL

  1. Drop this tw2002 folder into dosdoors\ right off wherever
ATDT is installed (demo board: /atdt/dosdoors/tw2002/).
  2. Console, then DOS Doors, then Scan. Enable the door.

DAILY MAINTENANCE (AUTOMATIC ON ATDT 1.7.2 AND LATER)

A large part of the TradeWars universe lives in EXTERN.EXE,
which the game expects to run once a day: port regeneration,
Ferrengi movement, radiation decay, derelict cleanup and so
on. This package names it in dosdoor.json:

    "maintenance": "EXTERN MULTITASK=NO"

On ATDT 1.7.2 or later, the first caller entering the door
alone after board midnight runs it automatically on the way
in; they see it happen and the game follows. If nobody plays
for over a day, the SysOp log says maintenance is pending.
You can also run it yourself any time: Console, DOS Doors,
Maintenance next to TradeWars 2002, and press the Run the
daily maintenance button. It takes under a minute on a 1000
sector game. Nothing breaks if days are skipped; the universe
  just stands still.

On older ATDT versions run it by hand from the maintenance
machine with the command EXTERN MULTITASK=NO, every day or
  two.

REGISTRATION (GOOD NEWS)

This copy is unregistered. The game is fully playable but has
1998's shareware limits: ONE node, no ship purchases beyond
the starter classes, no planetary Citadels, no Photon
Missiles, and the TEDIT value editors are read only.

TradeWars can still be registered today. John Pritchett's EIS
(the current rights holder) provides TW2002 v3 and Gold DOS
registration codes on request to anyone who registers TWGS v2
($15 and up) through the order page:

      https://eisonline.classictw.com/order/

Once you have codes: maintenance machine, command TEDIT, then
G (General setup), then X (sysop name), Y (BBS name), Z
(registration code). Names must match what the code was
issued for. After registering you can raise the node count:
configure each extra node in TEDIT under O (BBS node editor,
drop file type DOOR, I/O type Fossil), and raise max_nodes in
dosdoor.json to match, then Scan again.

STARTING A FRESH UNIVERSE LATER

Run BIGBANG from the maintenance machine. One quirk on ATDT:
after it prints "Your new universe is done!" it sticks at its
farewell message instead of returning to DOS. The universe is
complete at that point; simply close the maintenance machine.
  Then run EXTERN MULTITASK=NO once.

FOR PLAYERS

The 1998 manual ships as TWINSTR.DOC in the game folder. The
short version: you fly a Merchant Cruiser between starports,
buying low and selling high in Fuel Ore, Organics and
Equipment, upgrade your ship, colonize planets, and fight
everyone else for the universe. Turns are 250 per day. The
  game remembers everything between calls.

WHAT WAS TESTED ON ATDT

Universe creation, both maintenance programs, the sysop
editor, and a full caller session over the wire: DOOR.SYS
login at 38400 through the FOSSIL, new trader creation, the
home planet, blasting off, sector navigation and warping,
and a clean exit back to the BBS. The v3.09 binaries ship
with Borland's corrected runtime, so unlike most 1996 era
doors they need no Runtime 200 patch; these EXEs are
  byte for byte the originals.

FILES

  tw2002\dosdoor.json the ATDT manifest
tw2002\files\ the game, exactly as DOS sees D:\
